DTF Size & Placement Guide

Stop guessing where the print goes. The sizes and positions we use on our own press table — adult tees, fitted, youth, hoodies, hats, sleeves and pockets — on two printable pages.

Why this matters

The most common reason a perfectly printed transfer ends up in the reject pile has nothing to do with the print: it was pressed an inch too low, a size too big for the garment, or in a different spot on every shirt in the run. Misplacement wastes the blank and the transfer, and a mixed-size order can’t be standardized after the fact. Writing the numbers down — and measuring from the collar and the center crease instead of eyeballing — fixes that for every operator, every reorder.

How to position it — repeatable, no ruler set needed

  1. Find center. Fold the shirt lengthwise, press the crease lightly, and align the center of the design on that line.
  2. Measure from the collar. Full front: top of the print 3–4 in below the collar. Full back: 3 in. Left chest: ~3 in (2.75 in fitted, 2.5 in youth), centered on the wearer’s left.
  3. Tape it. A strip of heat tape stops the transfer shifting when the press closes — the easiest insurance against ghosting.
  4. Press. Pre-press 3–5 s, then 290–320°F / 8–15 s at medium pressure (35–45 psi); 100% cotton 310–320°F, 12–15 s. Hot peel, re-press 5–10 s with a cover sheet.
  5. Name the file by its width. BrandLogo_LeftChest_3.5in.png keeps reorders and staff consistent.

Questions printers ask

What size is a standard left-chest print?
Usually 3–4 inches wide, placed about 7–9 inches down from the shoulder seam. Use 3.5 in for a standard adult unisex tee, 3.25 in for fitted shirts and polos, 2.75 in for youth.
How far below the collar should a full-front design sit?
Center the design on the vertical crease with the top of the print about 3–4 inches below the collar. For a full back, about 3 inches below the collar.
What size should a DTF transfer be for a hat?
Keep hat designs 2–2.5 inches wide and about 1.75–2.25 inches tall, and press on a curved hat press. Low-profile dad hats press best near 2 inches wide.
