DTF vs Screen Printing: Which Is Better for Your Print Shop?
Screen printing has ruled apparel decoration for decades — but DTF has changed the math, especially for small runs and complex designs. Here is how they stack up.
Head–to–head
| Factor | DTF | Screen Printing |
|---|---|---|
| Setup cost | None per design | Screens and setup per color |
| Best run size | 1 to hundreds | Large bulk runs |
| Color and detail | Unlimited colors, photo detail | Limited colors, cost per color |
| Cost on small runs | Low | High (setup dominates) |
| Cost on huge runs | Competitive | Lowest per unit |
| Hand feel | Light film | Very soft |
Where DTF wins
DTF has no screens and no per–color charges, so a 12–piece order with a full–color logo is fast and cheap. It also lets you gang many different designs onto one sheet — impossible with screens. That flexibility is why so many shops use DTF for online and on–demand orders.
Where screen printing still wins
For very large single–design runs (think 250+ of the same one or two color print), screen printing per–unit cost is hard to beat once the screens are made. It also delivers the softest hand for specialty inks.

Is DTF cheaper than screen printing?
For small and medium runs, yes — there are no screen or setup fees. For very large single–design runs, screen printing can win on per–unit cost.
Is DTF as durable as screen printing?
Yes. Properly applied DTF withstands 50+ washes with vivid color and good stretch resistance.
